Tourniquet

Tourniquet é uma banda de metal cristão, surgiu em 1990 em Los Angeles, EUA.

Foi fundada por Ted KirKpatrick, Guy Ritter (primeiro vocalista), Gary Lenaire e Marky Lewis nas guitarras e Erik Jan James no baixo, lançaram seu primeiro álbum, Stop the Bleeding. Este álbum foi de um sucesso, recebeu duas indicações para o Dove Awards, pelo vídeo de "Ark of Suffering. Ted Kirpatrick recebeu por dez anos consecutivos o prêmio de melhor compositor do ano, pela Heavens Metal Magazine. Hoje a banda tem como vocalista, o cantor Luke Easter.

A banda faz uma mistura de hardcore, heavy metal, thrash metal, speed metal e hard rock, influênciados por compositores clássicos, como por exemplo, Beethoven e Bach. Letras com espiritualidade com perspectiva bíblica, recheadas por inspirações de jargões médicos, de Edgar Allan Poe e narrativas do velho testamento.

Stryper [Heavy Metal]

A história do Stryper iniciou um 1983, em Orange Country/Califórnia. O primeira nome da banda era Roxx Regime, integrado pelos irmãos Michael Sweet/Robert Sweet e por Oz Fox, respectivamente, vocalista/guitarrista, baterista e guitarrista. Em 1984,foi recrutado o baixista(e tecladista) Timothy Gaines e data deste período a mudança de nome da banda para Stryper (Salvation Through Redemption Yelding Peace Encouragement and Rightneous- salvação através da redenção gerando paz, encorajamento e retidão) que foi associado ao versículo bíblico Is 53:5. Tocando no circuito metal de Los Angeles, a banda logo atingiu um relativo reconhecimento e foi contratada pela Enigma Records, pela qual lançou o álbum de estréia, 'The Yellow and the Black Attack (1984), originalmente com 6 músicas (Em 1986 o álbum seria relançado com mais duas músicas).

Trata-se de um disco simples, mas homogeneamente pesado, com riffs densos e letras diretas sobre o amor de Deus. Já ficam evidenciadas as características que marcariam e diferenciariam o Stryper: a associação de riqueza melódica à músicas pesadas, envolvidas pela sinceridade e singeleza das letras e pelo timbre marcante da voz de Michael Sweet com seus gritos estridentes. A qualidade surpreendente para um primeiro trabalho foi devidamente recompensada com a inclusão da regravação do álbum (1986) na posição número 103 da Billboard e no recebimento do disco de ouro. 'Soldiers Under Command(1985), o segundo trabalho do Stryper, reafirma o potencial da banda e explicita sua sonoridade agressiva. O disco de ouro veio rapidamente e o álbum ocupou a posição 84 da Billboard, mas o grande sucesso ainda estaria por vir....

'To Hell With the Devil' (1986) é o ápice musical e comercial do Stryper! O vigor de clássicos como 'To Hell With The Devil', 'The Way' e 'Rockin Forces' catapulta a banda para uma posição jamais imaginada! O álbum atinge discos de platina, permanece entre os top 40 da Billboard, os vídeos de 'Honestly' e 'Free' ocupam a primeira posição da MTV, a turnê toma grandes proporções (data desta época o show que fizeram com o W.A.S.P.), ocorre a indicação para o Grammy... marcas impressionantes para uma banda que difundia uma mensagem completamente paradoxal aos princípios vigentes na indústria fonográfica. 'In God We Trust (1988) dá continuidade ao sucesso do álbum anterior....o disco de platina vem sem demora, a balada 'Always There for You' torna-se a mais requisitada na MTV e a turnê é aclamada (distribuía-se bíblias ao público em todos os shows).Outra balada deste álbum, 'I Believe in You', foi incluída na trilha sonora da novela O Salvador da Pátria (Rede Globo).Tudo isso revestido pela fidelidade, até então inabalável, do Stryper à crença cristã. Entretanto, com o lançamento de 'Against The Law' (1990), após um período de 9 meses de gravação reclusa na casa do baterista Robert Sweet, surgem rumores a respeito da sinceridade da fé da banda, porquanto o som, as letras e a perspectiva dos integrantes se torna mais comercial, abandonando a lealdade para com os fãs e o amor explícito para com Deus em troca de um provável sucesso a âmbito mais geral.
Esta mudança, até certo ponto radical, produz o efeito contrário do esperado, pois o álbum é claramente mal recebido pelos velhos fãs e, embora tenha atingido a platina, o retorno comercial esteve aquém dos objetivos traçados. Logo, as retaliações dos fãs produzem um período de reflexão nos integrantes sobre a condução do Stryper. A resposta da banda é a coletânea 'Can't Stop the Rock' (1991) que apresenta duas novas músicas que representam o retorno ao princípios originais do Stryper ('Believe' é um protesto contra a guerra do Golfo), manifestando a superação do período em que foram corrompidos pelo sucesso. Entretanto, o álbum não é suficiente para anular as trágicas conseqüências de 'Against the Law'. Michael Sweet abandona a banda para seguir carreira solo. O Stryper continua excursionando pela Europa, mas em 1992, o fim da banda, iminente após a saída de Michael, se concretiza. A transformação produzida pelo Stryper transcendeu, em muito, os parâmetros musicais e se estendeu à área religiosa-ideológica, quebrando incontáveis barreiras, afirmando o heavy metal como um veículo possível para a transmissão do evangelho cristão.

Petra

Petra é uma banda americana de rock cristão formada em 1972 pelos guitarristas e compositores Bob Hartman e Greg Hough.

"Petra" significa "rocha" em grego, e é uma alusão tanto ao estilo musical da banda. Como também à crença cristã na Bíblia, e em Cristo, A Rocha.

Petra foi uma banda de grande sucesso no meio cristão, tendo ganhado muitos prêmios e vendido milhões de discos. Seu pioneirismo no estilo é aclamado por fãs até hoje. Muitas bandas que vieram depois se inspiraram no Petra. Os primeiros anos da banda no entando foram de grande polêmica no meio cristão protestante dos EUA, pois o Rock era mal visto pelos cristãos conservadores americanos na época. O Petra só ganhou o sucesso e a aceitação depois de quase 8 anos no anonimato. Desde então a banda esteve constantemente na ativa até o fim de 2005, quando Bob Hartman decidiu encerrar as atividades.

Uma característica marcante da banda são suas letras abrangentes, que tratam tanto de crítica social e moral, como de exortação cristã e pregação da crença em Cristo.

A banda foi fundada em 1972, enquanto Bob e Greg estudavam no Christian Training Center em Fort Wayne, Indiana, EUA. Lá eles encontraram o baixista John DeGroff e começaram a tocar juntos. O baterista Bill Glover entrou depois na banda. A banda fazia parte do Jesus Movement, um movimento cristão de contrapartida ao movimento Hippie. Apesar da banda não ter emplacado nenhum grande sucesso durante essa época, construiu uma base sólida de fãs. O álbum de estréia que leva o nome da banda foi lançado em 1974.

O baterista Louie Weaver se juntou à banda um pouco depois de 1981. Em 1983. John Slick deixou a banda nessa época, sendo substituído por John Lawry, que utilizou pesadamente sintetizadores e baterias eletrônicas, fazendo o som da banda mudar para um Techno rock dos anos 80.

Em 1986 saíu o vocalista Greg Volz. Volz procurava seguir carreira solo e por isso abandonou a banda. John Schlitt, ex-vocalista da banda secular Head East foi convidado para a banda. O baixista Mark Kelly abandonou a banda em 1987, e para substituí-lo foi chamado Ronny Cates.


O álbum On Fire foi um sucesso, levando a banda a ganhar seu primeiro Grammy, de melhor performance gospel.
Em 1989 a banda gravou um álbum de hinos protestantes conhecidos, chamado Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out.
O álbum Beyond Belief, considerado pela maior parte dos fãs o melhor da banda. Este álbum é marcado por um som pesado e ritmado, tendo só duas baladas entre as dez faixas.
Em 1992 o álbum Petra Praise foi regravado com os vocais em espanhol e lançado como Petra En Alabanza.
O ano de 1993 viu o último álbum da formação mais aclamada do Petra, Wake-Up Call. Este álbum possui uma combinação de som pesado, músicas rápidas, baladas e uma ótima performance do vocalista John Schlitt. Estes três últimos trabalhos da banda (excluindo Petra en Alabanza) foram os maiores sucessos de sua carreira, todos sendo premiados com o Grammy de melhor álbum de gospel rock do ano.

Após a turnê de Wake-Up Call, John Lawry deixou a banda para se dedicar a projetos pessoais, e Bob Hartman abandonou a guitarra para se tornar o produtor e compositor da banda e ficar mais tempo com a família.

Entram então o tecladista Jim Cooper, que era técnico de John Lawry, e o guitarrista David Lichens. A banda grava e lança em 1995 o álbum No Doubt. Apesar do relativo sucesso do álbum, os dois novos membros iriam sair mais tarde devido a conflitos pessoais com John Schlitt, além do baixista Ronny Cates, devido a problemas familiares. Entra então na banda o baixista Lonnie Chapin.

O guitarrista e tecladista Kevin Brandow e o guitarrista Pete Orta entram na banda, dando um som totalmente novo ao álbum God Fixation, em 1998. O estilo deste álbum tende ao Pop rock contemporâneo.

Em 2000 o Petra lança Double Take, um álbum com os maiores sucessos da banda em versão acústica. Apesar do descontentamento dos fãs mais antigos com as novas versões dos clássicos, o álbum levou a banda a ganhar seu último Grammy, de melhor álbum de Gospel rock do ano. Kevin Brandow abandonou a banda antes da gravação desse álbum, sendo substituído por Trent Thomason. Mas todos estes jovens membros acabaram por deixar a banda após a turnê, e para piorar a gravadora rompeu com o Petra, colocando a banda quase que num fim forçado.

Foi então que Bob Hartman decidiu entrar novamente na banda, tentando reerguê-la. Com uma nova gravadora, o Petra lança em 2001 Revival, um outro álbum de hinos de louvor. Este álbum ganhou alguma atenção para a banda, que saiu para uma turnê com os novos membros Bryce Bell (teclados), Quinton Gibson (guitarra) e Greg Bailey (baixo). A turnê obteve um bom sucesso, e a banda parecia estar renascendo das cinzas, mas mais problemas ainda viriam. Quinton Gibson e Bryce Bell deixaram a banda, e um problema interno que gerou muita polêmica entre os fãs: o baterista Louie Weaver foi mandado embora, depois de 22 anos na banda.

A banda tentou dissipar os rumores e com o baterista Paul Simmons e Bob Hartman reassumindo as guitarras, gravou Jekyll and Hyde, o álbum mais pesado já gravado pelo grupo, lançado em 2003. O trabalho recebeu boas críticas, mas gerou pouco interesse na banda.

Então Bob Hartman, não suportando mais os recentes altos e baixos e a pouca atenção que o grupo tinha nos Estados Unidos, decide encerrar a banda no fim de 2005.

Em 4 de outubro de 2005 a banda grava um show em Franklin, Tennessee, junto com os antigos integrantes John Lawry e Greg Volz, e lança como seu segundo e último álbum ao vivo: Petra Farewell (farewell significa "adeus" em inglês), que também foi lançado em DVD.

O vocalista John Schlitt continua seguindo seu trabalho solo após o fim da banda, e o ex-baterista Louie Weaver se juntou a outros veteranos do Rock cristão e formou a banda Viktor.

Guardian [Hard Rock]

Guardian é uma banda cristã que muita gente por aí desconhece. David Bach (baixo) e Tony Palacios (guitarra) deram início ao conjunto em 1985 na cidade de Los Angeles, em plena efervescência de conjuntos ligados às drogas e sexo. O vocalista Jamie Rowe e o baterista Karl Ney entraram no grupo, levando adiante o projeto de mostrar o que o “Senhor fez em suas vidas” e, mesmo sendo motivo de piada para muitos, logo assinam com a Vertigo e lançam seu primeiro disco. Não satisf eitos, partem para um pequeno selo cristão chamado Pakaderm e a partir daí começam a chamar a atenção do público mais voltado para o lado espiritual e que, mesmo assim, curtia rock´n´roll.



E seus músicos eram realmente criadores intensos. “Miracle Mile”, de 1993, é seu terceiro registro e comprova isto, apresentando um trabalho gráfico muito bonito, letras reflexivas, uma gravação impecável e a atuação dos músicos são soberbas. Claro que nada disso contaria se as canções não fossem boas, o que não é o caso aqui. As faixas são bastante melódicas, cheias de swing e com boa dosagem no peso. Os bons garotos do Guardian aumentaram em muito sua reputação com este trabalho. A vida continua com Guardian se apresentando por diversos países e lançando inúmeros trabalhos, sendo que muitos deles fogem bastante da sua proposta inicial de tocar hard rock. Fato curioso é que em 1998 colocaram no mercado um disco de covers chamado “The Yellow And Black Attack Is Back”, do Stryper! Reproduziram todo este álbum! Se alguem quiser ver eh so entrar no post do Striper e ver a capa.
